In contrast to what is often assumed, patients with mental disorders are more often victims of crime than perpetrators. However, research on victimization of patients has gained much less attention compared to perpetration. With our research projects, we aim to enhance understanding of victimization in psychiatry and investigate the effectiveness of new interventions aimed at reducing victimization in patients with mental health problems. When proven effective, these interventions can be implemented in mental health care.
Victimization Research is a collaboration between three research groups embedded in health care organizations in the Netherlands: Arkin Mental Health, GGZ InGeest and Academic Medical Centre. These research groups are linked to the VU University and the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
Our research projects are part of the Violence Against Psychiatric Patients programme, financed by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
